Herbal medicine represents one of the most important fields of traditional medicine all over the world. The dried and powdered bark material of Baccaurea courtallensis Muell.-Arg and Prosopis juliflora DC was extracted successively with petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol in the increasing order of their polarity using soxhlet apparatus and the solvent was removed under pressure to obtain extracts. Yield of extract in each solvent was recorded. All the extracts were subjected to preliminary phytochemical screening. The results showed that most of the phytoconstituents tested were present in methanol extract of both the plants. A relatively less number of phytoconsituents were detected in petroleumether extract. The presence of phytoconstituents namely alkaloids, terpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids and tannins could be responsible for the pharmacological activities of plants.
